Printmaking

Printmaking encompasses a variety of processes. I do not teach all of them but I teach quite a few. The processes that I teach include:

  • Screenprinting (single or multi-color)

  • Lino-Cut

  • Relief Printing

  • Collagraph

  • Japanese Woodblock

  • Drypoint Etching

  • Chine Collé

  • Mono-printing

  • Gelli-printing

These processes all require different equipment. Some can be taught on any table surface and some need specialized equipment. The length of the workshop depends on on the process. Some of these processes can be taught in one class and some require multiple classes. Typically I teach these classes at Relay Ridge Community Printshop or Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts.

Encaustic Collage

My approach to the encaustic process is less traditional than just painting with the materials. I create collages by building up layers of paper, traditional drawing materials, encaustic medium, and paint. I then carve into the layers of wax and inlay color into the marks I have made. I also use pan pastels, transfer paper and alcohol inks to the very top surface. My end game is the depth of the piece and to be able to see all of the layers from the foreground to the background.

When I teach this process it depends on the length of the workshop as to what we learn and practice. I have taught these workshops in as little as 3 hours and have spent an entire week teaching this engaging process.

Fiber Art & Textiles

Fibers and textiles as an artistic medium covers quite a wide variety of processes. I do teach quite a few of the different processes. Some of these processes include:

  • hand-stitching (all types)

  • machine-sewing

  • fabric dyeing (including natural dyes)

  • cyanotype

  • weaving (table-top looms)

  • Wet-felting

  • needle felting

  • stencil dyeing

  • printing on fabric

These processes have different time constraints to consider. I am able to teach some of them in one class and some require longer class times. I enjoy teaching blocks of the different processes together so that the student can see how all of the processes can work together to create interesting pieces.
